A few years ago we struggled with the question, “Should we allow our kids to join FaceBook or MySpace?” Well, we don’t need to ask that question anymore. The sites are part of the culture. The kids have joined in droves and so have millions of adults. So now we need to ask, how do we monitor our students’ behavior on these sites, and how do we advise them? Very often our trusting students are  filling their sites with careless words, false bravado, and pictures that place them in jeopardy if not danger. Besides attracting predators, we are now aware that colleges and employers are checking the social sites for entries by their applicants. A reference to drugs, sex, or other careless behavior could have serious and lasting negative consequences.

Here is a collection of sites that may help students, parents and teachers with decisions concerning online safety. These sites cover such topics as cyberbullies, predators, cyberethics, plagiarism, online scams and good parenting practices. (These are merely suggestions that may work for you, this is not necessarily an endorsement from Spalding High School.)
